Spaghetti and Tuna Fish Sauce

Yes, I know. I am well aware that sauce with tuna fish sounds very strange to some….err most people. But this is a dish that we used to have at my grandma and grandpa Lucente’s house on Christmas Eve. I mean we’re Italian, of course there is going to be fish!

I grew up with this sauce. And my sister, who is quite the picky eater, loves it too! Just take a gander at the simple ingredients and consider it for dinner some night…

If you like tuna fish, don’t knock this ’til ya try it!

  • 2-3 small cans of tuna fish in oil
  • 2 tablespoons or so of olive oil
  • minced garlic – enough for your own liking
  • 1 large can of tomato sauce
  • 1 large can of tomato paste
  • 1 1/2 cans of water – using tomato paste can
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 box of spaghetti

In a large medium-hot skillet or pot, pour out the tuna fish including the oil. Add additional olive oil and garlic to saute and stir frequently.

After the tuna has been cooking for a few minutes, add your sauce and paste.

Using your empty tomato paste can, fill it with water full to the brim and add to the sauce. Then do it again but only half way.

Salt and pepper the sauce to taste and let it come to a rolling boil.

Turn heat down and let it simmer on very low for about an hour. Give it a little stir every once in awhile to make sure the fish is not sticking to the bottom of the pot.

While it’s cooking, boil a pot of water and add your spaghetti until cooked the way you like it.

Serve it up!
